reverse mentoring

Recently a friend of mine Brad Armstrong, a photojournalist from Arizona, was laid off of the East Valley Tribune where he was the directory of photography. Brad is a nationally recognized photographer, with a life rooted to stay in Phoenix and isn’t too too far away from retirement. Now he is re-branding his life as a commercial photographer.

self-portrait-webBrad  has been my mentor since I was 19. When I was a cub photographer at the same newspaper, he would sit for hours and teach me lighting and review my portfolio. He is one of those people who make you feel like you are the most special person in the world. For all his time, I  am grateful.

Now, 10 years later, I have become his reverse mentor. I’ve been consulting with him daily as he launches his new career. It has been so much fun!

Building a business is scary, rewarding and simply put… work. You have to learn a whole new set of skills:  accounting, marketing, web and logo branding and oh ya… getting those clients. You can be the best photographer in the world and still get no business.

We have a lot of work to do to get his materials up to speed. I intend to get him there too … because he got me here. I’ll keep you posted on his life transition and success. :)

admin - Hi Debbie, liveBooks is actually our website designer and host. They are fantastic. For albums we have used Leather Craftsmen for years. They are wonderful and allow us to create custom designed art pieces for each of our clients. I highly recommend them. Best wishes to your daughter, Rachel, and PS…. I loved shooting Annette and Tim’s wedding! They are awesome! Beth :)February 4, 2009 – 7:47 am

Debbie Stepaniak - Dear Beth,
My youngest sister-in-law ran away to Maine and got married. She hired you to be her photographer. Her name is Annette Stepaniak, now Clayton. I just have to tellyou that her photos were the most beautiful ever. I love your site and all of your work. It’s sensitive, emotion filled and lovely to look at. You are truly an artist with the camera.

Now, why I am writing you. My daughter (Annette’s niece)Rachel Luebbe is a stay at home mother, who has been building her own photography business for 2 years now. She has always had a love of taking pictures and a love of people. I have been looking around your site and wondering if you had any suggestions for her. She uses Shutterfly to make photo books for her clients. Her other option is getting prints and putting them in a book herself. I was wondering who you use. I put her website above. Is livebooks who you use? Thank you for any help. I was so happy for Annette and Tim, they loved their wedding experience!
Thank you, Debbie StepaniakFebruary 2, 2009 – 4:33 pm
