Flaghill Winery: Lee, New Hampshire wedding Lisa & Keith 09.05.09

0070

Lisa and Keith married at the beautiful Flaghill Winery in Lee, New Hampshire. This couple is very close to my heart. I have a special bound with Lisa, even though I’ve known her only a short time. She had me from from hello. Well, maybe from goodbye— she has one of the best closing email tag lines ever: “Some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants won’t help” ~ Calvin and Hobbes.

Yah, I knew this couple was for me! I quickly got them on board for my 2009 season. Back in the Spring, we did a really fun engagement session that had me rolling on the ground laughing! It was fun to see their reception album and wine bottle favors covered with our crazy e-shots later at the wedding! Lisa also came and did a modeling shoot for me too. We had a great time again!

Keith and Lisa are magically fun together! By the time the wedding hit, we were like old friends. I just felt very much at home with them. Their wedding was far from work! Take a look!

The service took place over looking the vineyard. Keith and Lisa chose two family members to make a statement celebrating the commitment of marriage. It was gorgeous. I was tearing up!

Lisa and Keith kiss after their first dance! By the way, they did a fake out into the history-of -dance-like-skit. They totally nailed it and brought the house down. Great time!

Keith has this hysterical big family! He has two brothers which reminded me of the Walski boys who I grew up with. Ya know, the family down the street with that funny mom (thank God she had a sense of humor, or things may have gone bad! LOL) who somehow kept a very rowdy all-male crew in tact. They are that family! Keith and his brothers are classic.  They had all these inside jokes and were at constant play together… but don’t ask me what they were doing here. No idea.

Keith and Lisa,  More wine on me when I see you next! The pleasure was all mine to be with you on your wedding day! So proud of you guys! (And a super big thanks for my own cork seating card that said “Beth our amazing photographer.” I have it on my desk and I looooooove it! It makes me so happy!)

Beth :)

Blush by Brian, Bar Harbor Regency Hotel: Hillary and Kevin 08.29.09

Photos by Blush Associate, Brian.

Hillary and Kevin teamed up with Brian on their 08.29.09 wedding awhile back. If you recall, that was the day of the crazy hurricane. This couple kept smiles on all day, letting nothing rain on their parade.  And here’s what the couple recently wrote us,”I wanted to say how thrilled we were with Brian doing our wedding.  He was incredible!! We both said that we never noticed him until we wanted him and he was always right there….ninja skills. So, thank you to you guys for making everything great.”

Take a look at just a few teaser shots from Brian. Hillary’s dress… gorgeous!

York Harbor Inn: York, Maine wedding Laura and Ben 09.04.09

A gorgeous Friday evening set the stage for my good friends Laura and Ben’s wedding at the York Harbor Inn in York, Maine. The day was fitting for a really wonderful couple who love Maine and are proud to call it home!

I met Ben through a BNI, a business networking group, here in Portland. He has been my commercial banker at Key Bank and pal for over a year now.  I actually used him as an example for a BNI speech I once gave as my “target audience” — a professional in their late 20′s, professional, engaged, male or female. Sounds a bit boring when put in flat marketing terms, huh? A year or so later… his fiance and him were indeed booking me for their wedding. Here’s the cool thing about Ben — he is my organized, an all-business banker by day — and a rocker by night. He plays guitar and his groomsmen were all members of his band. I admit, it was fun to see the other side of my business buddy at his wedding surrounded by the other side of his life.

The most inspiring part of my day was actually Laura though. Laura is a hairstylist at a local high-end Portland salon. Her hair and makeup for the day were amazing! So Vogue!  Her dress was fabulous. Her sophiticated style really added to our images. (I wish I was good at my own hair, makeup, and girl-power as her fun-loving bridesmaids were… seriously, I make a better photographer than a chica. LOL.) These gals were awesome.

I had a nice Friday event with these two— I knew I would. Laura and Ben, congratulations on a lovely night! It was a treat to see you laugh together. Your connection is wonderful and I wish you all the best for the future. Enjoy it together.

There are so many good photos from this Maine wedding but here are a few of my favorite, art-tastic shots from the day. Also special thanks to Gail at Dodge the Florist for the unique orchids and flowers in these shots.

Here is the amazing Laura prepping for the day and later on the beach in York, ME.

Nonantum Resort: Kennebunkport, Maine wedding Jessica and Danny …. and Hurricane Danny 08.29.09

This is the story of Jessica and Danny and of the hurricane that hit Maine on their wedding day, Saturday 08.29.09. It is probably the best wedding-day story I have ever told visually as a photographer. Settle in, this one will take awhile, but it’s well worth it.

Jessica contracted me to do her wedding well over a year ago. When a bride books me that early, she’s not messing around. Jessica planned every detail down to the last strawberry in the champagne glass. It was to be an elaborate Catholic Mass and a sophisticated, yet fun evening at the popular  waterfront Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, Maine.

With her limos arranged, boats lined up, photo locations scouted, table decorated, band ready and her hair did, Jessica forgot to plan for one major thing— hurricane Danny. That’s right, a hurricane named after her very own husband -to-be was about to seriously crash her party.

It’s important to know that Jessica is one of the most gorgeous girls I’ve ever worked with a personality to match. She’s warm, likes the finer things– but is in no way pretentious. She has a big, welcoming, inviting presence. And funny… she’s so funny. But how would she handle her perfect day being ruined by the perfect storm? You just never know with a bride— it could go either way.

I called Jess nervously the day before and talked to her about backup plans for photos. Already, the boat for her grand reception entrance— cancelled. The outdoor tent— cancelled. The cocktail hour on the deck— cancelled.

The day was starting with drama. Let’s begin:

Jessica having fun during the morning with her sister.

Jessica walks through the hurricane to the church. Keep in mind for later, Jess has been sitiing in a limo for well over 45 minutes waiting on later guests due to the storm and the only bathroom for the church is outside in the back of the building.

1493

Jessica walks with her father down the isle. Even I was crying.

1156

Father Labar of St. Brendan’s gave one of the funniest, moving homilies I have ever heard, asking Danny and Jessica questions that had us all roaring with laughter. He was amazing!

1220

So now that our bride has been watching rain fall, waiting way too long in a limo and belly laughing, what did you expect? She had to go! Stopping the service briefly, Jessica calls her maids to help her get to a bathroom. It was pretty funny. I have shot over 350 weddings and have never seen this one. Only Jessica could do it with such humor. She took a little bow on her way back to the alter. Everyone cheered!

The show went on… a gorgeous service.

0781

1344

After the service, we did portraits. I’m not going to lie to you, a little rain is a bummer in Maine but can be worked around.  A hurricane is totally un-doable. Jessica and I planned out pretty water pictures on docks at the Nonatum. We were far from where we both wanted to be, so I went to work and got creative. Not easy with a large wedding party but we had fun!  (PS– This is when you find out if the photographer you hired is worth their salt. And why having “Uncle Fred” do your wedding photos is not a good idea…. this situation is not an easy one. You really have to be trained to get good, creative interior portraits.) We did the families at the alter but these wed did around the church to give Jessica and Danny something more creative.)

0502

0522

We got funny at the end. I like this one the party looking all directions. Just for fun!

0494

Off in the limo! Friends toast the couple. I’m on the floor in the limo here. I love riding along!

0536

At the Nonantum, more quick portraits. Who needs sun and water right? These are cozy. Rain gives a photographer an opportunity to stretch a bit!

0895

0887

In the spirit of the storm outside, the reception inside went wild. Thanks to the good works of a personal favorite Maine band of mine, The Bob Charest Band…. fabulous! Jessica and Danny’s friends are what I call “good rowdy” … totally fun, while being very cool and respectful. Loved you guys!

This was funny and took even me by surprise. When the wedding party was introduced into the reception they each did a dance or something funny! This guy put a bunch of powder on his hands and became — well, like a magic man? (UPDATE: The couple’s friends are from Cleveland. LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team always does this powder throwing ritual at the beginning of each game so our Clevelander groomsmen Joe and bridesmaid Lindsay decided to ‘recreate’ for the ‘walk-in’.) This wedding tested al my skills and kept me on my toes!

0638

A great toast by a groomsman gets Jessica laughing!

0820

Worm! Worms!

1311

Danny brings sexy back.

1298

Couple gets taken for a ride in the chairs.

1054

One more drama and casualty of the hurricane… the floors were pretty slick and wet and a bridesmaid fell and hurt her ankle… sigh!  Eventually the EMS was called. Hope you are ok! (UPDATE: Moira actually broke her foot! She’s in a boot for 4 months!)

1316

The couple’s day was far from the norm and far from what they expected but still they laugh and still they dance.

0685

So what makes a wedding-day story really good anyway? There’s the angst of looming danger, drama, comedy, conflict, resolution and, of course, a happy ending. I’d take an amazing story to tell my kids and grand kids for a lifetime over a perfect day! Absolutely! After a wedding, a couple has only what they started with— each other.

Jessica and Danny, I am so glad that you have each other! You’re a wonderful couple and I had so much fun! Thanks for my best wedding story to date!  Enjoy! With love, Beth :)
